Abstracts at Nutrition 2024

NUTRITION 2024 abstract submissions must include unpublished research and be submitted through the NUTRITION 2024 Abstract Submission website. Multiple abstracts can be submitted by the same presenting author but must address different research. All abstracts must be submitted in English with accurate grammar and spelling suitable for publication. Authors are expected to comply with the NUTRITION 2024 Scientific Integrity Policy for Submission of Abstracts.

Abstracts must be submitted by the presenting author who is expected to present the abstract at NUTRITION 2024. Co-authors can be included on the abstract. 

Presenting authors are required to pay a non-refundable $85 fee for each submitted abstract. A credit card will be required for payment. No refunds will be provided if the abstract is withdrawn or not accepted. The abstract submission fee is separate from the meeting registration fee.

To offset the NUTRITION 2024 abstract submission fee for individuals who have been financially impacted such that they are otherwise unable to submit, or the full submission fee would present a hardship, ASN has established an Abstract Submission Fee Waiver program. ASN members and non-members are eligible to apply. Applications are subject to approval and approved waivers are limited to available funding. For consideration, please complete and submit an application by January 29, 2024. Waiver recipients will be contacted no later than February 5, 2024.  

Based on academic level and ASN membership status, presenting authors may apply for award competitions and abstract recognition awards during abstract submission. For more information, click here. Notifications will be sent to selected individuals in late April 2024.

Revisions can be made through the NUTRITION 2024 Abstract Submission website through February 12, 2024. Please proofread abstract submissions carefully because edits will not be made by ASN staff. Abstracts will be published verbatim using the text and author information provided during abstract submission.  

To facilitate publication of meeting abstracts in Current Developments in Nutrition in time for NUTRITION 2024, only essential changes can be made after abstract submission. Essential changes received by March 25, 2024 may be incorporated into the meeting app and CDN supplement. Essential changes that cannot be accommodated before NUTRITION 2024 will be published as an erratum or a corrigendum to the Current Developments in Nutrition supplement. 

All abstracts will be peer-reviewed through a double-blind review process for quality assurance. Reviewers will consider the following when rating abstracts:  abstract components (objective, methods, results and conclusions), significance and writing quality. Results should include at least preliminary data. To say, “the results will be discussed a NUTRITION 2024,” is insufficient. Abstracts without results will be rejected. Exceptions will only be made for study protocol abstracts, which must be denoted as a study protocol in the abstract title.

Presenting authors will be notified by email regarding abstract acceptance on March 11, 2024 and abstract programming details (abstract presentation number, presentation type/date/time/location) on April 1, 2024. Accepted abstracts will be published in Current Developments in Nutrition, ASN’s open access journal. Abstracts will be published verbatim using the text and information provided during abstract submission. Abstract authors will be listed in the same order as they are included in the abstract submission.  

While accepted abstracts will be published in Current Developments in Nutrition, accepted abstracts will be indexed in PubMed Central but PubMed is not expected to index the abstract. 

Authors are free to develop their work into full article submissions without any permission or approval by the Current Developments in Nutrition editors. All authors are encouraged to submit their full articles to one of ASN’s journals:  The Journal of Nutrition, The American Journal of Clinical Nutrition, Advances in Nutrition or Current Developments in Nutrition. When submitting your work to an ASN or other journal, publication of the meeting abstract should be mentioned in the cover letter to the submitting journal. When submitting outside the ASN family of journals, authors are encouraged to read the journal’s Instructions for Authors or contact the editorial office for further guidelines on disclosing abstract publication. 

Full abstract citation information will be available once the abstracts are published in Current Developments in Nutrition. 

Accepted abstracts are embargoed until the beginning of the first session in which they are presented, unless otherwise specified. An embargo means that information and data pertaining to the abstract may not be announced, publicized or distributed before the embargo date and time. Promotion of general topics, speakers or presentation times is allowed and encouraged as long as specific findings are not included in the announcement. 

Submission of an abstract constitutes a commitment by the presenting author to present it if accepted. Failure to present, if not justified, will jeopardize future acceptance of abstracts for ASN conferences.  

Presenting authors associated with an abstract must register for the meeting and are responsible for all travel expenses (airfare, food, hotel, etc.) associated with presenting at the meeting. The registration fee and travel costs are separate from the abstract submission fee. Registration information and rates will be available in late December 2023. During submission, presenting authors will be asked to: 

1. Select a Primary Track that best correlates with their work. We recognize that often research crosses several tracks, and that is okay. We will use this information to assess the overall distribution of program content and to assist with the recruitment of abstract reviewers. 

1. Identify a Primary Topical Area related to the subject of your research. Again, we recognize that abstracts could cross multiple areas, and that is okay. 

1. Identify two Keywords to assist with abstract programming. Suggested keywords have been provided by volunteer leaders from ASN member groups including Research Interest Sections (RIS) and Councils. You may choose any keywords from the list provided or you may choose to insert your own. 

Supporting images, tables and graphs will not be accepted with abstracts.  

Please note ASN strongly recommends the use of “people-first language”. This includes describing individuals as people with a medical condition rather than as diseases or disabilities. Terms such as “adults with obesity” and “children with diabetes” are preferred over “obese adults” and “diabetic children”. For more information consult “Use of people-first language with regard to obesity” Am J Clin Nutr 2018;108:201 or “The Effect of Words on Health and Diabetes” Diabetes Spectrum 2017;30:1116.

Accepted abstracts will be published in Current Developments in Nutrition, ASN’s open access journal. Accepted abstracts will be indexed in PubMed Central but PubMed is not expected to index the abstract.

NUTRITION 2024 abstracts must be submitted through the NUTRITION 2024 Abstract Submission website. All presenting authors must create a new user account to submit an abstract. To do so, click the ‘Join Now’ button at the bottom of the NUTRITION 2024 Abstract Submission website login page.

Once logged into the NUTRITION 2024 Abstract Submission website, presenting authors should click the green ‘Click here to begin a new abstract’ link to begin.

The abstract title should be entered in Title Case and be short and specific. The abstract title has a character limit of 150 characters not including spaces.

Presenting authors can indicate their interest in a preferred presentation type for the abstract. These include:

• • Poster (Poster Session): NUTRITION 2024 will feature traditional Poster Sessions on June 29 through July 1, 2024. Poster presentations offer attendees the ideal opportunity to present their own research and learn more about their peers’ science.

• • Oral (Oral Session or Poster Theater Flash Session): At NUTRITION 2024, Oral Sessions and Poster Theater Flash Sessions will highlight outstanding abstracts in a topical area. Presenting authors can opt to have their abstract considered for oral presentations, however, selection is not guaranteed. If an accepted abstract is not selected for oral presentation, it will be programmed as a poster presentation.

• • Indifferent

The academic level of the presenting author must be indicated during abstract submission. Academic levels include:

• • Investigator (more than 10 years past receiving a doctoral or terminal degree)
  • Early Career II Investigator (within 6-10 years of receiving a doctoral or terminal degree)
  • Early Career I Investigator (within 5 years of receiving a doctoral or terminal degree)
  • Postdoctoral Fellow
  • Medical Trainee (intern/resident/fellow)
  • Graduate Student
  • Medical Student
  • Undergraduate Student
  • High School Student
  • None of the above

The presenting author’s contact information and ASN membership status must be provided when a user profile is created on the NUTRITION 2024 Abstract Submission website. Once logged in and a new abstract submission is started, the presenting author’s information will automatically be included in the Presenting Author Task. Follow the directions provided to complete the presenting author information.

The following information must be confirmed for the presenting author:

If a middle initial is provided for the presenting author, it will be included when the abstract is published in Current Developments in Nutrition.

Accepted abstracts will be published in Current Developments in Nutrition, ASN’s open access journal. When published, abstract authors will be listed with the presenting author first, followed by the co-authors as listed in the Co-Authors(s) Task.

The abstract submission should identify all co-authors who have substantially contributed to the concept, data collection and analysis, or preparation of the abstract and therefore may have intellectual property claims to the content.

Presenting authors must select a primary track and primary topical area with which the abstract should be associated. Only one track and topical area can be selected. Please consider submitting your abstract even if you believe it does not fit precisely into one of the options available. Abstracts will be reviewed and an abstract’s track and/or topical area may be adjusted to group like abstracts together for presentation.

Below, please find more information about specific topical areas for clarification:

• • Clinical Case Study Abstracts: Special instructions regarding abstract submission for the Clinical Case Study topical area are included on page 13 of the NUTRITION 2024 Abstract Submission Guidelines and Instructions.

• • Methods Abstracts: Abstracts should address newly established or characterized methods, or evaluations of existing methods.

• • Protocols Abstracts: Abstracts should include descriptions of proposed studies, or recruitment and process results of newly started studies. Abstracts including preliminary results from ongoing studies should not be submitted to the Protocols topical area and should be submitted to the appropriate topical area for the abstract’s content.

The abstract has a character limit of 2000 characters not including spaces. Each abstract should be formatted using the headings Objectives, Methods, Results, Conclusions and Funding Sources. of the NUTRITION 2024 Abstract Submission Guidelines and Instructions. The abstract’s current total character count not including spaces can be found in the gray bar at the bottom of the page.

• • Objectives: State the precise objective, the specific hypothesis to be tested, or both.

• • Methods: Provide a clear, concise description of specific methods, including research design. Describe interventions, if used.

• • Results: Report the most important findings, including results of statistical analyses. Results should include at least preliminary data. To say, “the results will be discussed at NUTRITION 2024,” is insufficient. Abstracts without results will be rejected. Exceptions will only be made for study protocol abstracts, which must be denoted as a study protocol in the abstract title.

• • Conclusions: Summarize in 1 or 2 sentences the primary outcomes of the study, including their potential significance (avoid generalizations).

• • Funding Sources: Funding sources (organizations, institutions, agencies) for the research included in the abstract should be listed. Grant numbers should not be included in the abstract as this could impact the efficacy of a blinded abstract review process.

When using abbreviations for compounds, the full name should be spelled out for the first mention. The Current Developments in Nutrition instructions for abbreviations, units of measure and nomenclature should be followed. Do not begin sentences with numerals.

Names and institutions of the presenting author or co-authors should not be included in the abstract body as this could impact the efficacy of a blinded abstract review process.

When entering abstract information on the NUTRITION 2024 Abstract Submission website, do not use the options to insert/edit video, insert/edit link, or create a table. Any such elements will be removed.

Special Characters and Formatting: Please proof the abstract carefully to confirm that any special characters (such as α, β, ≤, ≥, etc.) are displaying properly.

Authors must disclose the use of generative AI and AI-assisted technologies in the writing process by adding a statement at the end of their abstract. This statement will be included in the AI Disclosures section at the end of the abstract body. No other information should be included in the AI Disclosures section except for the AI-related statement.

This declaration does not apply to the use of basic tools for checking grammar, spelling, references, etc. If there is nothing to disclose, there is no need to add a statement.

The below guidance only refers to the writing process, and not to the use of AI tools to analyze and draw insights from data as part of the research process.

Where authors use generative artificial intelligence (AI) and AI-assisted technologies in the writing process, authors should only use these technologies to improve readability and language. Applying the technology should be done with human oversight and control, and authors should carefully review and edit the result, as AI can generate authoritative-sounding output that can be incorrect, incomplete or biased. AI and AI-assisted technologies should not be listed as an author or co-author, or be cited as an author. Authorship implies responsibilities and tasks that can only be attributed to and performed by humans, as outlined in Elsevier’s AI policy for authors.

Authors should disclose in their abstract the use of AI and AI-assisted technologies in the writing process by following the instructions below. A statement will appear in the published work. Please note that authors are ultimately responsible and accountable for the contents of the work.

Purpose:  

Promotes interest in clinical and human nutrition among those in postgraduate programs. 

Additional Requirements:  

• Open to graduate students, medical students, and medical trainees who have not received a doctoral research degree prior to the abstract deadline.  

Process:  

• Applicant indicates desire to be considered for this award in the designated section during abstract submission. 
• Five individuals will be chosen to participate in an award competition at NUTRITION 2024. 
• Finalists will provide a brief statement confirming their intention to compete and describing their involvement and responsibilities in their study.  
• Finalists will provide a 13-minute presentation, consisting of a 10-minute talk followed by 3 minutes of questions and answers. 
• Pending external funding, finalists will each receive a modest monetary award and certificate. One overall winner will be determined. 

In honor of Dr. Douglas J. Paddon-Jones’ commitment to young investigator research in the areas of dietary protein, muscle metabolism, & healthy aging.  

Purpose:  

Recognize one graduate student and one postdoctoral fellow for outstanding research related to dietary protein, muscle metabolism, and/or healthy aging. 

Additional Requirements:  

• Open to graduate students, medical students, and postdoctoral fellows.  
• May only receive the award once as a graduate student and once as a postdoctoral fellow 

Process:  

• Applicant indicates desire to be considered for this award in the designated section during abstract submission. 
• A review committee will review and rate abstracts, and identify two winners (one graduate or medical student and one postdoctoral fellow) deemed to be outstanding. 
• Two winners will each receive a $500 award and certificate. 

This award competition is pending funding. Should funding be confirmed, this award competition will be held. 

Purpose:  

Challenges early career faculty, scientists and clinicians, in nutrition by providing a juried abstract review and special oral session in which they compete in presenting their research findings.  

Additional Requirements:  

• Open to early career investigators within 10 years of a doctoral degree working a career in nutrition science or practices (e.g., junior faculty, staff, assistant scientists).  
• Postdoctoral fellows, medical interns, residents or fellows, or trainees are not eligible to participate. 

Process:  

• Applicant indicates desire to be considered for this award in the designated section during abstract submission. 
• During abstract submission, a brief statement must be provided that addresses the applicant’s role in the research contained in the abstract; how the research has potential implications for policy, public health or future research directions; and a brief summary of the applicant’s career objectives in nutrition science or practice.  
• Six finalists will be selected to participate in an award competition at NUTRITION 2024. 
• All oral presentations will be evaluated using standard criteria and indicators of success. Presenters’ work is evaluated at these five levels: 
• Hypothesis / Problem Statement 
• Design, Methods & Controls 
• Results 
• Conclusion, Predicting Impacts, Future Work 
• Presentation & Professional Competence 
• Judges for the oral competition include ASN members in various career stages as well as a peer young professional evaluator. 
• Pending external funding, finalists will each receive a modest monetary award and certificate. One overall winner will be determined. 

Organized by ASN’s Research Interest Sections, the Global Nutrition Council and the Medical Nutrition Council  

Purpose: 

Recognizes the highest quality research presented by students, medical trainees, and postdoctoral fellows to ASN’s topical areas. 

Additional Requirements:  

• Open to undergraduate students, graduate students, medical students, medical trainees, and postdoctoral fellows.  

Process:  

• Each of ASN’s Research Interest Sections as well as the Global Nutrition Council and the Medical Nutrition Council identify the highest scoring abstracts submitted by students, medical trainees and postdoctoral fellows.  
• Finalists are invited to participate in a poster competition at NUTRITION 2024.  
• Finalists will receive a certificate. Pending external funding, selected winners will receive a modest monetary award. 

Endowed by Dr. George A. Bray and Marilyn M. Bray 

Purpose:  

Recognizes two students for outstanding research related to the causes, treatment or prevention of obesity.  

Additional Requirements:  

• Open to undergraduate, graduate, and medical students.  

Process:  

• Applicant indicates desire to be considered for this award in the designated section during abstract submission. 
• A review committee will review and rate abstracts, and identify two winners deemed to be outstanding. 
• Two winners will each receive a $500 award and certificate. 

Organized by the Global Nutrition Council

 Purpose:  

Provide travel funding to a researcher from a low or middle income country.  

 Additional Requirements:  

• Member of ASN’s Global Nutrition Council  
• Junior faculty member within 5 years of receiving a masters or doctoral degree and based at a university or research institution in a low or middle income country.  

 Process:  

• Applicant indicates desire to be considered for this award in the designated section during abstract submission. 
• Finalists will be identified based on abstract ratings.  
• Finalists will provide a brief statement confirming their intention to compete and describing their involvement and responsibilities in their study.  
• Pending funding, one awardee will receive a travel grant. (Target grant: $2,000)  

Purpose:  

Tasks graduate students or medical students to hone their research presentation skills.  

 Additional Requirements:  

• Open to graduate students and medical students who have not received a doctoral research degree prior to the abstract deadline.  

 Process:  

• Applicant indicates desire to be considered for this award in the designated section during abstract submission. 
• During abstract submission, a brief statement must be provided that addresses the applicant’s role in the research contained in the abstract; how the research has potential implications for policy, public health or future research directions; and a brief summary of the application’s applicant’s career objectives in nutrition science or practice.  
• A review committee will review and rate abstracts based on the following criteria: study objectives/aim/hypothesis; experimental design/methods; selection of critical data and elimination of nonessential data; organization/clarity of figures and tables; explanation of results; and interpretation of data and quality of conclusions drawn.  
• Up to nine finalists will be chosen to participate in an award competition at NUTRITION 2024.  
• Finalists will provide a brief statement confirming their intention to compete and describing their involvement and responsibilities in their study.  
• Pending external funding, finalists will each receive a modest monetary award and certificate. Up to three overall winners will be identified.  

Organized by the Nutrition Translation RIS

Purpose:  

Provides an opportunity for early-career scientists and clinicians to demonstrate how their research can be translated to a defined audience to improve public health and/or health outcomes. 

 Additional Requirements:  

• Open to postdoctoral fellows, medical trainees, and other early career I investigators pursuing a career in nutrition science or practice (e.g., junior faculty, staff, assistant scientists).  
• Fellows and other young professionals must have obtained their doctoral degree within the past 5 years.  

Process:  

• Applicant indicates desire to be considered for this award in the designated section during abstract submission. 
• During abstract submission, a brief statement must be provided statement (no more than 300 words) that presents a clear connection between the preclinical or clinical research and clinical practice, consumer or community applications; describes practical applications for policy, health and/or wellness and long-term potential impact; and explains how findings could be communicated to an audience beyond nutrition scientists.  
• Four finalists will be selected to participate in an award competition at NUTRITION 2024. 
• Finalists will provide a fifteen-minute presentation, consisting of a 12-minute talk followed by 3 minutes of questions and answers. Judges will rate each scientist’s ability to communicate the following:  
• A brief review (limited to 3 minutes) of the foundational research that was the subject of the abstract submitted.

Purpose:  

Challenges early career scientists and clinicians in nutrition by providing a juried abstract review and special oral session in which they compete in presenting their research findings.  

 Additional Requirements:  

• Open to postdoctoral fellows, medical trainees and other early career I investigators holding a doctoral degree pursuing a career in nutrition science or practices (e.g., junior faculty, staff, assistant scientists).  
• Fellows and other early career professionals must have obtained their doctoral degree within the past 5 years. 

 Process:  

• Applicant indicates desire to be considered for this award in the designated section during abstract submission. 
• During abstract submission, a brief statement must be provided that addresses the applicant’s role in the research contained in the abstract; how the research has potential implications for policy, public health or future research directions; and a brief summary of the applicant’s career objectives in nutrition science or practice.  
• Six finalists will be selected to participate in an award competition at NUTRITION 2024. 
• All oral presentations will be evaluated using standard criteria and indicators of success. Presenters’ work is evaluated at these five levels: 
  • Hypothesis / Problem Statement 
  • Design, Methods & Controls 
  • Results 
  • Conclusion, Predicting Impacts, Future Work 
  • Presentation & Professional Competence 
• Judges for the oral competition include ASN members in various career stages as well as a peer young professional evaluator. 
• Finalists will each receive a $200 award and certificate. One overall winner will receive an additional $200 award.

Recognizes students for outstanding research related to pediatric nutrition. 

Additional Requirements:  

• Open to undergraduate, graduate, and medical students. 

Process:  

• Applicant indicates desire to be considered for this award in the designated section during abstract submission. 
• A review committee will review and rate abstracts, and identify two winners deemed to be outstanding. 
• Two winners will each receive a $500 monetary award and certificate.

Purpose:  

Recognizes students for outstanding abstracts and presentation skills. 

 Additional Requirements:  

• Open to undergraduate, graduate, and medical students. 
• One entry per person. 

 Process: 

• Applicant indicates desire to be considered for this award in the designated section during abstract submission. 
• Individuals who have submitted an abstract to be presented at an oral session at NUTRITION 2024 are also eligible to compete for this award but must put together a 3-minute oral presentation. 
• During abstract submission, a brief statement must be provided that addresses the applicant’s role in the research contained in the abstract; how the research has potential implications for policy, public health or future research directions; and a brief summary of the applicant’s career objectives in nutrition science or practice.  
• Six finalists will be chosen based on abstract quality.  Top abstracts will be of high scientific merit and clearly articulate the research objective(s), experimental design and methodology, results, and conclusions (i.e. significance and/or implication of research findings). 
• Six finalists will be selected to participate in an award competition at NUTRITION 2024. 
• Finalists will provide a 3-minute oral presentation. Oral presentations will be judged on organization and clarity, ability of finalists to communicate the research to the judges in an accurate but succinct manner, and ability of finalists to field questions from the judges. 
• Pending external funding, three top finalists will each receive a modest monetary award and certificate. 

Organized by the Inclusion, Diversity, Equity and Accessibility Committee (IDEA) 

Purpose:  

This competition provides an opportunity for young investigators from underrepresented communities within the biomedical and life sciences to participate in the annual meeting by discussing their research findings. Finalists will strengthen presentation and professional skills associated with a career in the sciences.  

Additional Requirements:  

• Open to graduate students, medical students, and or medical trainees who have not received a doctoral research degree prior to the abstract deadline. 
• Applicants must identify as an individual from an underrepresented group in the biomedical and behavioral sciences.  Individuals from the following racial and ethnic categories; Black or African American, American Indian or Alaska Native, Native Hawaiian or other Pacific Islander, Hispanic or Latino American, individuals with disabilities, individuals from disadvantaged backgrounds and women from the aforementioned backgrounds are shown to be underrepresented at many career stages in biomedical, clinical, behavioral and social sciences.1
