Sponsored Webinar: Oral Health and Nutrition: Imperative for Healthy People 2030 and US Dietary Guidelines
Sponsored by Mars Wrigley and the Oral Health Alliance
Thursday, November 16, 2023 | 1:00 – 2:30 PM ET

The 2020-2025 Dietary Guidelines (DGA) identified dental caries as a major diet-related chronic disease of public health concern. The Healthy People 2030 Objectives highlighted the importance of preventive oral health practices across the life span. Almost half of children have treated or untreated dental caries and 13 percent have untreated dental caries. In seniors, 68 percent have gum disease and 19 percent untreated tooth decay. Poor oral health can lead to systemic chronic diseases and impede chewing of fruits, vegetables, whole grains, and other nutrient-rich foods. Several factors, including lack of insurance and economic inequities, can limit access to dental services, which raises the value of preventive oral health practices. Session attendees will gain an understanding of factors linking poor oral health to insufficient diets and chronic disease and will learn the importance of preventive oral health practices ─ brush, floss, chew, drink fluoridated water, and limit calories from added sugars ─ beginning in pregnancy and continuing through childhood, adulthood, and aging, for long-term health.

Important Food Sources of Fructose-containing Sugars and Adiposity: Findings from a Systematic Review and Meta-analysis of Controlled Feeding Trials
Monday, May 8, 2023 | 2:00 PM – 3:30 PM ET

The April issue of The American Journal of Clinical Nutrition features a comprehensive systematic review and meta-analysis that illustrate the need for nuance in public health guidance related to sugar consumption.

Evolving evidence has indicated that the effect of fructose-containing sugars on adiposity may vary among food sources. For example, research has consistently shown that consuming sugar-sweetened beverages (SSBs) at excess calorie levels leads to increased body weight and elevated obesity risk. Yet, evidence is unclear about the potential impact on adiposity related to the consumption of other food sources of fructose-containing sugars such as fruit, which are associated with numerous health-promoting benefits. To help inform evidence-based public health recommendations, the American Society for Nutrition commissioned this systematic review and meta-analysis of controlled trials to better understand the effect of different food sources of fructose-containing sugars at various levels of energy control on body weight and other measures of adiposity, using the Grading of Recommendations, Assessment, Development, and Evaluation (GRADE) approach.

Nutrition Rounds – Hot Topics in Nutrition & Cancer: Diet and Breast Cancer Survivorship
Tuesday, October 25, 2022 | 1:00 PM – 2:30 PM ET

Conducted in partnership with the American Institute for Cancer Research

Breast cancer is the most common cancer among women in both the developed and the developing world. With improved diagnostics and treatment, women are being diagnosed earlier and not only surviving but also surviving longer. The role of lifestyle factors in improving survival rates is a relatively new but active area of research. A growing body of evidence is increasing our understanding of what lifestyle choices may help reduce a recurrence or death from breast cancer.

The World Cancer Research Fund International’s Continuous Update Project report on breast cancer survivors is the most rigorous, systematic analysis of research on cancer prevention and survivorship through diet, weight, and physical activity. This scientific resource informs current guidelines and policy on cancer prevention and survival globally.

Hear from a panel of experts who contributed to the latest report on lifestyle factors and breast cancer survivorship to be published in October 2022 in the International Journal of Cancer.

National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES): Opportunities for Revitalization
Thursday, September 22, 2022 | 12:00 PM – 1:30 PM ET

There is growing concern that the increasing challenges faced by NHANES are impairing the utility and reliability of the data provided by this survey. NHANES data are a critical component of the nation’s health infrastructure and serve as an important resource for health professionals, policy makers, researchers, the food and supplement industry, commodity groups, and public health departments.

While NHANES staff have worked diligently and hard to carry out the survey with commendable results, factors such as decreasing response rates, small sample size, increasing costs, and the lack of funds for innovation and the study of new methodologies have placed NHANES in a precarious position. Further, the current need for timely granular and sub-group specific data to address disparities greatly increases the pressure on NHANES. This webinar outlines the nature of the challenges now experienced by NHANES and then focus on considerations for solutions including a stepwise approach to revitalizing the survey. The webinar is intended to help inform the ASN interest in supporting activities important to the nutrition, food, and health community. This webinar will not focus on the specifics of the upcoming 2024 NHANES survey for which the NHANES staff anticipate offering a webinar to update ASN members in late 2022.
