ASN launched an Excellence in Nutrition Fellow Recognition Program (FASN) to support and recognize mid-career professionals. The Distinguished Fellow of ASN (DFASN), formerly “Fellow of ASN”, has been elevated to recognize and pay tribute to the lifetime achievements of outstanding scientists who have had distinguished careers in the field of nutrition.

What is the new Excellence in Nutrition “Fellow of ASN (FASN)” program?
The Fellow of ASN (FASN) is a program that recognizes members who have distinguished themselves through ongoing contributions to the field and sustained engagement in our community.
Who is eligible to be nominated for the “Fellow of ASN” program?
Outstanding nutrition professionals who have demonstrated significant career impact and service to the Society, are 10 or more years past their terminal degree, and have been active Regular, Professional or Clinician members in good standing for at least 5 years are eligible to be nominated.
Which member categories of ASN members are eligible to apply?
To recognize diverse career paths, criteria have been developed for research-focused, translational, and mixed trajectories. Scientist, Clinician, and Professional Members can apply. Early Career Members are not eligible.
What are the requirements for the Research Pathway?
Eligible candidates must have at least ten (10) high impact first or senior-authored, peer-reviewed publications of original research, AND at least fifteen (15) additional peer-reviewed original research publications or scholarly reviews, perspectives, or editorials in peer-reviewed scholarly journals on nutrition topics. In addition, they must demonstrate outstanding impact in the field of nutrition research or translation.
What are the requirements for the Translational Pathway?
Eligible candidates must have demonstrated technical impact for at least 10 years (can be non-consecutive) in advancing nutrition in research, clinical practice, or public programs through one or a combination, and outstanding impact in the field of nutrition research or translation.
What are the requirements for the Combination Pathway?
Individuals with combined experience in both the Research and Translational Pathways are encouraged to apply using a Combination Pathway, based on their experience in both research and translation. A minimum of 10 years cumulated nutrition research and translation impact applies and the prospective candidate’s credentials will need to show first or senior author status on impactful publications as well as translational impact.
How does one become nominated for the “Fellow of ASN” program?
Individuals may be nominated by an ASN member, or they may self-nominate with two letters of support.
How is this program different from the “Distinguished Fellow of ASN (DFASN)” award?
Distinguished Fellow of ASN (DFASN) remains as the Society’s highest accolade, recognizing the lifetime achievements of distinguished ASN members. It recognizes career accomplishments and service to ASN for members with a minimum of 30 years of membership.
What is the selection process?
Once nominated, members must complete an application online including specific criteria required. These requirements will be reviewed by a selection panel and a recommendation will be made for the inaugural selection of 2026 Excellence in Nutrition Fellows of ASN.
Can self-nominations be submitted?
Yes, members in good standing can self-nominate or be nominated by an ASN member.
What are the criteria for evaluation?
Please check the ASN website for specific criteria required. These criteria include research accomplishments, leadership, community engagement, and impact within the field of nutrition.
Who will evaluate the nominations?
A selection panel will be convened for evaluating applications received and making a recommendation for the inaugural selection of 2026 Excellence in Nutrition Fellows of ASN.
What are the benefits of becoming a “Fellow of ASN”?
Some of the benefits may include recognition by your peers, networking opportunities, and increased visibility, which can lead to new career development opportunities. Fellows of ASN will be able to use the “FASN” credentials for as long as they retain their ASN membership.
How many Fellows will be recognized each year?
There is no pre-determined limit to the number of scientists recognized annually as Fellows of ASN, and this number may vary from year to year.
Is there a fee associated with applying or being recognized?
No, there is no application or other fees associated with this program.
What is the timeline for the nomination and selection process?
The nomination process will follow the timeline for the ASN and ASN Foundation Awards Program. The nominations deadline is December 1, 2025.
How will the honorees be announced and celebrated?
The 2026 Fellows of ASN will be recognized in ASN communications, social media, and at NUTRITION 2026.
Can international scientists apply or be nominated?
Yes, nomination is open to any member in good standing who meets the eligibility criteria.
