To honor outstanding contributions to the field of nutrition and recognize the ongoing achievements of ASN members in the prime of their careers, ASN is proud to announce the launch of the Excellence in Nutrition Fellow of the American Society for Nutrition (FASN) program. This prestigious Fellowship will recognize active leaders who have demonstrated sustained membership in the Society and who have made exceptional impacts through their work in nutrition research and/or translation. Selection criteria have been carefully tailored for both research-focused and translational career paths.

Frequently Asked Questions

Target Candidates 

  1. Have been an ASN Scientist, Clinician or Professional member for 5 or more years
  2. Are 10 or more years past their terminal degree
  3. Demonstrate substantial and impactful contributions to the field of nutrition research and/or its translation
  4. Have held leadership roles within ASN
  5. Are actively engaged in their careers and continuing to make significant contributions

Research Career Path Criteria 

  • At least ten (10) high impact first or senior-authored, peer-reviewed publications of original research   
  • At least fifteen (15) additional peer-reviewed original research publications or scholarly reviews, perspectives, or editorials in peer-reviewed scholarly journals on nutrition topics  
  • Outstanding impact from one or more of the following specifically in the field of nutrition research or translation:  
    • Demonstrated proficiency garnering research funding  
    • Demonstrated excellence in mentoring  
    • Recognized excellence or demonstrated contributions above and beyond basic expectations in teaching and training  
    • Demonstrated impactful evidence-based communications via traditional and non-traditional medium that focus on translating science  
    • Contributions to ASN’s scientific journal portfolio as an author, reviewer, and/or editorial board member   
    • Participation in grant review panels, NIH study sections, governmental or non-governmental advisory boards/committees/task forces, etc.  

Translational Career Path Criteria 

Demonstrated technical impact for at least 10 years in advancing nutrition in research, clinical practice, or public programs through one or more of the following:   

  • Translating nutrition research in teaching or training  
  • Translating nutrition research into clinical practice  
  • Nutrition research grants or program development and oversight. Technical impact is emphasized rather than general program management administration.  
  • Demonstrated impact translating nutrition research into health policies or regulations  
  • Demonstrated impact translating nutrition research in food research programs   
  • Demonstrated impact of adapting nutrition research for implementation regionally, nationally, or globally for improving public health 

Outstanding impact from one or more of the following specifically in the field of nutrition research or translation:  

  • Peer-reviewed original research publications or scholarly reviews, perspectives, or editorials in peer-reviewed scholarly journals on nutrition topics   
  • Demonstrated impactful evidence-based communications via traditional and non-traditional medium that focus on translating science  
  • Contributions to ASN’s scientific journal portfolio as an author, reviewer, and/or editorial board member   

Combination of Research and Translational Career Paths 

Individuals with combined experience in both the Research and Translation Career Paths are encouraged to apply using a Combination Career Path for consideration, based on their experience in both research and translation. A minimum of 10 years cumulated nutrition research and translation impact applies. Candidates will need to show first or senior author status on impactful publications as well as translational impact. 

All nomination materials must be submitted electronically through the ASN Awards Portal by 1 December 2025. Information required during submission process: 

  • Nomination by an ASN Member or self-nomination including contact information for the applicant 
  • Two letters of support from ASN Members, including: 
    • Impact of applicant’s contributions to the field explained in the letters of support, including how selection criteria were met in terms of impact  
    • Demonstrated excellence and/or commitment  
    • Reputation in the nutrition science, clinical practice, advocacy, and/or education community 
  • Personal statement (500 word-limit) summarizing impact through contributions in nutrition science, clinical practice, advocacy, and/or education 
  • Description of leadership roles and service within ASN and the broader nutrition community  
  • Description of honors and awards 
  • Curriculum vitae, abbreviated format (up to 5-6 pages total in length) 

Nominations will be evaluated by an ASN selection panel and approved by the Board of Directors. Incomplete or late nominations will not be considered. Fellows of ASN can retain and use the FASN recognition for as long as they maintain an active ASN membership on a continuous basis. 

This class of Excellence in Nutrition Fellows will be honored during NUTRITION 2026, July 25 – 28 July 2026, in National Harbor, Maryland, just outside Washington, DC.
