ASN Launches Coalition to Support the NIH Office of Nutrition Research (ONR)

Join the American Society for Nutrition (ASN) in support of the National Institutes of Health (NIH) Office of Nutrition Research (ONR)! The NIH has made great strides to support nutrition research, including developing the first ever 2020-2030 Strategic Plan for NIH Nutrition Research, moving the ONR from the National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases to the Office of the Director, and launching the new Nutrition for Precision Health Program, powered by the All of Us initiative. The Friends of ONR coalition will support the efforts of ONR to elevate nutrition research, its leadership, staffing, and resources; achieve broad interdisciplinary support for nutrition research; allow for increased collaboration and coordination; and encourage and support the next generation of nutrition researchers. Friends of ONR is a voluntary coalition led by ASN which is comprised of organizations that support the ONR. The Coalition will work with ONR in advancing nutrition science to promote health and reduce the burden of diet-related diseases.  Friends of ONR will serve as a liaison between important stakeholder groups and ONR and advocate on NIH/ONR’s behalf. Activities may include:

  • Providing valuable input and feedback to ONR;
  • Coordinating annual update meetings for coalition members with ONR staff;
  • Sending joint letters to key members/Committees of Congress;
  • Making joint visits to members of Congress and their staff; and,
  • Organizing briefings, including Congressional briefings, to demonstrate the importance of nutrition research at the NIH.
