For over 20 years, ChromaDex has been an industry leader in the area of analytical methods, reference standards and proprietary ingredients. ChromaDex is the main owner and licensee of intellectual property (IP) related to nicotinamide riboside (NR), and in collaboration with our strategic partners, manufactures both NR as an ingredient (Niagen®) and a finished dietary supplement product, TruNiagen®, to the highest quality standards https://www.nsfsport.com/certified-products/listing-detail.php?id=1195327. Our NR is a clinically effective and efficient precursor to nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide (NAD+), an essential cellular cofactor. We were honored as the “2019 Best of the Industry: Ingredient Supplier” award from Nutritional Outlook https://www.nutritionaloutlook.com/view/nutritional-outlooks-2019-best-industry-awards-ingredient-supplier-chromadex for our efforts to set the industry standard for excellence in commercial science and safety.
  • The ChromaDex External Research Program (CERP) is an essential component of ChromaDex’s R&D Program https://www.chromadex.com/research/cerp/. We value and encourage strong scientific rigor behind our products, and our relationships with academic institutions help make this happen. Through CERP, we are the leading supplier of patented NR to the research community. Since 2013, we have developed over 250* material transfer agreements with more than 180 institutions in 33 countries to advance the scientific exploration of NR and other ChromaDex compounds. We provide ChromaDex bulk and/or clinical material (including placebo), for exceptional preclinical and clinical research projects that are selected from a continuous pool of applicants. More than 90% of our studies are investigator driven and third party funded. These collaborations have resulted in over 100* peer-reviewed publications, including 20 clinical manuscripts, and ~70% of clinical NR studies registered on clinicaltrials.gov are using or have used our materials. *As of December 2021.
  • Our NR has both new dietary ingredient (NDI) and generally recognized as safe (GRAS) notifications from the US-FDA recognizing it is safe for both dietary and food ingredient needs. Our product has further been reviewed by the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA), Health Canada, and the Therapeutic Goods Administration of Australia (TGA) allowing for its use in these markets. We are the only NR product that has obtained any of these safety reviews. Our ingredient is also analyzed in an ISO approved laboratory https://standards.chromadex.com/accreditation.
  • As you determine the source of NR that you will use for your future studies, please keep the following in mind:
  1. The stability of NR-Cl depending on the form is a major concern. ChromaDex’s crystalline form is highly stable as a powder. Other providers may sell an amorphous form which is highly unstable, and quickly gelatinizes when exposed to air, resulting in degradation.
  2. Isomeric purity. Our Niagen is evaluated for the beta-NR conformation to ensure it is the bioactive form. If the NR-Cl is a mixture of alpha- and beta-NR, the efficacy would be reduced, and little is known if the alpha-NR conformation would inhibit the NAD biochemical pathway.
  3. Since Niagen has been reviewed and received a safety notification for dietary and food ingredients, we understand the process and composition of the finished ingredient material. There is little known about the potential contaminants (by-products, solvents, impurities) in third-party sourced NR-Cl, which could impact study results and reproducibility.

Sustainability Support and Expertise:

  • ChromaDex is interested in sustainable processes. We would like to partner and develop relationships with investigators exploring improving sustainability in the dietary supplement and reference standards space.
    Our innovation directives include developing and implementing sustainable processes and reducing our carbon footprint across the organization. Sustainable analytics and processes (such as using supercritical fluid/green chemistry technologies) are being evaluated to replace outdated and hazardous processes. Regulatory Insights and Expertise:

  • ChromaDex has spent several years supporting and defending inventorship and the academic institutions where the work is performed. We encourage investigators to engage their institutions’ IP team early to determine patentability of innovations and prevent obstruction of IP efforts. We encourage investigators in expanding their research portfolio to include IP protection.
