With registration assistance and give-back opportunities, NUTRITION 2021 LIVE ONLINE is an open and inclusive event

As the professional home for the nutrition community, ASN and the ASN Foundation are committed to providing learning and professional development opportunities for all individuals who seek them, as well as minimizing any barriers to advancement. We believe that personal or financial circumstances should not prevent anyone from pursuing their goals. We are proud to offer the premier Nutrition meeting, and we are even more proud to offer support for those who might otherwise not be able to attend.

Donations to the ASN Foundation Benefit the Future of Nutrition

We are grateful for the generous donations to the ASN Foundation made by ASN members and others in the field of nutrition. More than 120 attendees donated to the Foundation as part of their registration for NUTRITION 2021 LIVE ONLINE. With donations like these and others throughout the year, we’re able to make it easier for nutrition students and professionals to attend NUTRITION 2021 LIVE ONLINE and learn about the new science and clinical information that will help them contribute to the future of nutrition. In this way, we all benefit.

Registration Reduction Fee Waivers

COVID-19 has created disruptions in the scientific and educational communities, including loss of funding, budget cuts, and in some cases, loss of jobs. Many of our colleagues are being challenged in new ways. For those who have been financially impacted in a way that impedes their ability to cover the full registration fee for NUTRITION 2021 LIVE ONLINE, ASN has established a Registration Reduction/Hardship Waiver. These waivers offset the cost of registration, allowing nearly 100 people to attend the meeting who wouldn’t have been able to otherwise.

Scholarship for Underrepresented Racial and Ethnic Groups in Nutrition Science

National labor statistics show that people working in nutrition are overwhelmingly White – some data shows as much as 70% of the registered dietitians in the United States are White. ASN supports building a more diverse nutrition workforce that reflects the communities and populations we serve. This year, we awarded 8 Scholarships for Underrepresented Racial and Ethnic Groups in Nutrition Science. This scholarship facilitates participation in NUTRITION 2021 LIVE ONLINE and is open to members of a nationally underrepresented racial or ethnic group who work as nutrition researchers, academics, clinicians, scientists or investigators.

Family Support Grants

ASN is committed to continuing its tradition of offering a family-friendly NUTRITION meeting and providing an open and inclusive learning environment. We understand that family care responsibilities can make it difficult to fully participate in meetings, whether in person or virtual. This year, we awarded 16 Family Support Grants to offset caregiving expenses for dependent children or family members.

Providing Opportunities at All Education and Career Stages

To encourage participation among students and educators – who are vitally important to our future – ASN offered reduced rates for NUTRITION 2021 LIVE ONLINE to undergraduate and graduate students, high school students and teachers. Similarly, we offered reduced rates for retired individuals to encourage their continued involvement in the field and sharing of their vast knowledge, as well as to unemployed individuals to encourage their professional development.

Promoting Diversity in STEM

The Leaders through Education, Action and Hope (LEAH) Project is a science, technology, engineering and math (STEM), college access, and career readiness program for Boston area youth typically underrepresented in STEM fields (low-income youth, youth of color, first generation college youth). NUTRITION 2021 LIVE ONLINE was originally scheduled to take place in Boston before shifting to a virtual event due to continuing COVID-19 concerns. To give back to our planned host city, the ASN Foundation is supporting the LEAH Project through donations toward their mission to cultivate the power of youth leaders to transform their lives and communities through science, education, and service.

Since 2005, LEAH has impacted the lives of over 7,000 low-income elementary and high school students of color in the Boston area through a rich blend of opportunities, experiences, and relationships that support and inspire them to succeed academically and to pursue their career interests.

Make a Difference through Philanthropy
