New award will recognize outstanding fundamental or applied nutrition research related to protein and amino acid metabolism and growth

In his opening editorial, The Journal of Nutrition’s Editor-in-Chief Xingen Lei, PhD expressed his excitement on promoting the transformation of classical nutrition science into a broad, interdisciplinary, and highly integrated new science. To encourage new submissions and recognize outstanding science for that mission, the Teresa A. Davis Award in Growth and Protein Nutrition is being established.

This award honors Teresa A. Davis, PhD for her exceptional leadership as Editor-in-Chief of The Journal of Nutrition from 2014 to 2023 and her significant contributions to the field of growth and protein nutrition. Dr. Davis currently serves as Professor of Pediatrics at the Baylor College of Medicine and is recognized internationally for her top-quality research on the nutritional regulation of protein and amino acid metabolism and growth in humans and animals. She served as Presidents of the American Society for Nutrition and the American Society of Animal Science.

During her tenure as Editor-in-Chief, Dr. Davis implemented measures to enhance the ease and speed of publishing while maintaining rigorous peer review standards. By the end of her term, data revealed that 100% of authors surveyed were satisfied with their experience and acknowledged that the high-quality peer review process had improved their manuscripts. Additionally, Dr. Davis expanded the journal’s editorial board to provide authors with superior scientific evaluations of their submissions within the fastest turnaround time in peer review in ASN’s journals portfolio.

“Dr. Davis has given her deepest passion to The Journal of Nutrition and upheld its longstanding tradition of excellence for the world’s oldest journal devoted to nutrition research. She often proudly reminded our global authors, reviewers, and readers that The Journal of Nutrition launched our Society back in 1928 which is a fitting remembrance as we will celebrate the journal centennial in 2028,” stated Xingen Lei, PhD, Editor-in-Chief.

The award will be given annually to the first author and the corresponding author of an outstanding research paper on novel nutrition research related to protein and amino acid metabolism and growth in animals and humans and published in The Journal of Nutrition during the preceding year. The lead author will receive a $1,000 honorarium and be recognized at NUTRITION, the American Society for Nutrition’s annual scientific meeting.

Initial funding has been acquired to launch the award. To ensure the award’s continuation, individual donations and funding partners are being sought and will be greatly appreciated. Visit the ASN Foundation’s donation site to support this award or text JNutr to 41444 to donate.
