Frequently Asked Questions
Many valuable nutrition education resources already exist, but they are spread across different organizations, institutions, and platforms, making them difficult to find and use.
The Physician Nutrition Learning Hub is intended to serve as a central connection point. It does not replace existing resources; instead, it helps users find, organize, and apply them in ways that support curriculum mapping, competency-based education, assessment, and implementation.
More than a repository, the Hub aims to help the medical education community learn from what already works, adapt tools to local settings, and build shared momentum for advancing physician nutrition education nationwide.
Nutrition plays a critical role in preventing and managing many leading causes of chronic and acute illness, yet many physicians report receiving limited nutrition education during training.
There is also growing national interest in improving nutrition education in medical training. Recent efforts by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services have highlighted the important role nutrition plays in preparing physicians to care for patients.
The Physician Nutrition Learning Hub was created to help medical educators find high-quality resources, share successful educational approaches, and connect with others working to strengthen nutrition education throughout medical training. As the Hub develops, it will continue to expand in response to educator needs, stakeholder feedback, and emerging opportunities to support physician nutrition education.

The Physician Nutrition Learning Hub is designed for medical educators and curriculum leaders, as well as physicians, trainees, students, healthcare professionals, and institutions committed to advancing physician nutrition education. Initial resources are focused on supporting medical educators and curriculum development, with additional content and tools for trainees, students, clinicians, and other audiences being added as the Hub evolves.
You’ll see the following terms used:
- Nutrition Champion: An individual who initiates, advocates for, and helps lead efforts to integrate nutrition into medical education, clinical practice, and health systems. A Nutrition Champion often serves as the catalyst for change and helps build broader institutional support.
- Interprofessional Nutrition Team: A collaborative group of physicians, Registered Dietitian Nutritionists (RDNs), nurses, pharmacists, trainees, and other health professionals who work together to advance, implement, and sustain nutrition education and patient care. These teams help embed nutrition across curricula, clinical practice, and healthcare systems.
The Physician Nutrition Learning Hub is being developed by ASN in collaboration with an initial planning group representing expertise in physician nutrition education, clinical practice, nutrition science, and medical education. The planning group includes representatives from organizations such as ASPEN, the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics, the Association of Nutrition Departments and Programs, and the National Board of Physician Nutrition Specialists, among others. ASN plans to broaden stakeholder engagement through an advisory structure representing medical education, healthcare, nutrition science, professional societies, and other key partners.
The Physician Nutrition Learning Hub serves as an implementation resource for educators responding to the HHS Nutrition Education Initiative. By organizing educational materials around the HHS Nutrition Education Domains, sharing practical examples, and connecting educators with peers and experts, the Hub aims to help institutions translate national recommendations into effective nutrition education programs.
The initial launch is the first phase of the Hub. Additional resources, implementation examples, and opportunities to connect will be added over time as the Hub grows.

A good first step is to understand where nutrition is already being taught. Many schools discover that nutrition is covered in multiple courses but is not intentionally coordinated across the curriculum.
As the Physician Nutrition Learning Hub grows, it will provide practical tools to help educators map existing content, identify gaps and opportunities, and locate educational resources aligned with the HHS Nutrition Education Domains. Additional implementation resources and examples from peer institutions will be added over time.
Many institutions are successfully integrating nutrition into existing coursework and clinical experiences rather than adding standalone courses. Nutrition concepts can be incorporated into case-based learning, organ system blocks, clinical clerkships, quality improvement projects, and interprofessional education.
Over time, the Hub will build a collection of practical implementation examples, case studies, and educational strategies contributed by institutions across the country.
