We are pleased to share a new opportunity for ASN members to support the advancement of nutrition science and help authors publish well-conducted research across the broad, interdisciplinary field of nutrition. Current Developments in Nutrition (CDN) is piloting a Scientific Editor model, and we are seeking qualified nutrition scientists who are interested in serving in this role.

What Is a Scientific Editor?
A Scientific Editor is a trained nutriton expert who oversees peer review for a specific group of manuscripts. For CDN, Scientific Editors will handle manuscripts that are transferred from another ASN journal into Current Developments in Nutrition. Scientific Editors will:
- Ensure that transferred manuscripts align with CDN’s aims and scope
- Manage the peer review process for assigned papers
- Support authors through review and revision
- Help authors strengthen their work and improve their chances of successful publication
- Contribute to CDN’s mission of publishing well-conducted studies that reflect the breadth and interdisciplinary nature of nutrition research.
Scientific Editors will work in parallel with CDN’s Editor-in-Chief, Deputy, and Academic Editors. They will focus exclusively on transferred manuscripts and will not be involved in the editorial process for original submissions to CDN.
Why This Matters
This model allows CDN to give more authors the opportunity to revise and improve their research, even if their manuscripts were not accepted at another ASN journal. It is designed to encourage authors to remain within the ASN family of journals rather than seeking peer review elsewhere, helping ensure that well-conducted nutrition research continues to find a home within ASN publications.
This approach supports:
- Better service for authors looking for the right home for their work
- Increased capacity to handle submissions efficiently
- Strong alignment between manuscripts and the journal’s scope
- Continued focus on scientific rigor and editorial quality
- Ongoing growth and success for CDN
Training and Oversight
Scientific Editors will complete a structured training program developed with Elsevier, in partnership with ASN and CDN leadership. Their work will be closely supported to ensure that all decisions follow CDNs aims and scope and meet ASN’s publishing standards.
ASN and CDN leadership will continue to uphold the journal’s strong commitment to scientific integrity and editorial independence. All decisions will remain based on scientific merit.
Why You Should Consider Applying
Serving as a Scientific Editor is a meaningful way to:
- Support fellow researchers at all career stages
- Strengthen the quality and rigor of published nutrition science
- Build and deepen editorial experience
- Contribute to the success and visibility of Current Developments in Nutrition
- Play a role in shaping the future of scholarly publishing in our field.
This opportunity is well suited for mid-career and senior investigators, as well as experienced early-career researchers who are ready to take on new responsibilities.
Scientific Editors will be compensated for their service, and the anticipated workload is approximately 3-4 hours per week.
Help Us Identify Strong Candidates
We encourage ASN members to consider this opportunity or share it with colleagues who may be qualified and interested. A strong and diverse group of Scientific Editors will help ensure that this model benefits authors and strengthens the journal.
