ASN Committee Service Opportunities
American Society for Nutrition committees play a critical role in advancing the Society’s mission. This overview outlines the purpose, expectations, and time commitment for each committee to help you identify where your expertise and interests align.

Committee on Advocacy and Science Policy (CASP)
The Committee on Advocacy and Science Policy provides strategic guidance and support for ASN’s advocacy and science policy initiatives to increase national and international recognition of ASN as the go-to organization for science-based nutrition information that guides policy development. The Committee shall develop and implement strategies that effectively promote ASN as the leading nutrition research advocacy organization. The committee will help target successful policy-oriented partnerships and collaborations, including those with federal agencies and coalitions, that best support ASN’s existing nutrition research advocacy efforts.
Committee members contribute through email exchanges and participate in approximately 5 conference calls per year (one hour and a half each) and one in-person meeting (one hour).
Public policy/regulatory experience is preferred. Committee members serve three-year terms.
For 2026-2027 cycle, approximately 3–4 new members will be appointed.
Education and Professional Development Oversight Committee
The Education and Professional Development Oversight Committee provides strategic direction and oversight for ASN’s education and professional development portfolio. The Committee identifies new opportunities through needs assessments; ensures programming serves diverse audiences across the multidisciplinary nutrition field; and monitors issues affecting nutrition education at all levels. The Committee advises on policies related to the development and delivery of educational activities and monitors accreditation and certificate programs; and monitors progress of education-related activities at the annual NUTRITION meeting.
Members contribute via email review of materials and participate in 3–4 one-hour conference calls per year (~ one hour each).
Experience as an ASN member volunteer and faculty member for educational activities, including continuing education, is preferred. Committee members serve two-year terms.
For the 2026-2027 cycle, approximately 2-3 new members will be appointed.
IDEA Committee (Inclusion, Diversity, Equity, Accessibility)
The Inclusion, Diversity, Equity, and Accessibility (IDEA) Committee enhances the participation and engagement of minority and diverse students, scientists, and professionals in the activities of ASN. The committee fosters diversity, equity and inclusion throughout ASN, including its volunteer leadership, programs, services and products. The committee promotes professional and leadership development to increase diversity, including supporting members in establishing long-term professional relationships with ASN. The committee also encourages more research in the area of nutrition health disparities among diverse groups and provide opportunities for research advancement and growth in professional practices. The goals of the committee are to support, promote and increase the representation of diverse groups, particularly the minority members within ASN.
Members contribute by supporting two annual competitions, a webinar series, and participate in 6-8 virtual meetings per year (~ one hour each).
Committee members are selected based on their experience participating in minority and diversity activities (professional or personal), and their interest in supporting and promoting representation of diverse groups with ASN and the nutrition field. Committee members serve three-year terms.
For the 2026-2027 cycle, approximately 3-4 new members will be appointed.
Membership Committee
The Membership Committee provides strategic guidance on programs and initiatives designed to enhance the value of ASN membership, strengthen member retention, recruit new members, re-engage lapsed members, and increase engagement across all member segments. The Committee ensures that membership programs reflect and respond to the evolving needs of individuals at all career stages, across diverse professional settings, and in global contexts.
Members contribute through email exchange and participate in quarterly meetings, one of which may occur at the annual NUTRITION meeting. Committee members typically serve three-year terms.
For the 2026-2027 cycle, approximately 3–4 new members will be appointed.
Publications Committee
The Publications Committee provides oversight and strategic guidance for ASN’s portfolio of four scientific journals. It is responsible for advancing innovative approaches to enhance the relevance, quality, and accessibility of the journals, ensuring alignment with ASN’s mission and strategic priorities. The Committee operates in accordance with ASN’s Bylaws, which affirm that each journal’s Editor-in-Chief maintains full independence and responsibility for its scientific content.
Committee members contribute through periodic email review of editorial appointments and participate in 3–4 conference calls per year (approximately one hour each).
Experience as an editorial board member, reviewer, and/or author is preferred. Committee members serve three-year terms.
For the 2026-2027 cycle, approximately 3–4 new members will be appointed.
Scientific Program Committee
The Scientific Program Committee provides strategic guidance of the official scientific program of NUTRITION, ASN’s annual meeting. Duties include providing feedback on proposed session ideas, confirming the focus of featured sessions and timely topics to be addressed, selecting finalists for the Graduate Student Research Award Competition, and advising on abstract submission and programming processes.
Committee members contribute through periodic email review of relevant materials and participate in 5-6 conference calls per year (approximately one hour each).
Experience as an ASN member volunteer, NUTRITION attendee, abstract presenter, or abstract reviewer is preferred. Committee members serve one-year terms.
For the 2026-2027 cycle, approximately 10 new members will be appointed.
